More information about this artwork

Gabriele de Santis is a conceptual Italian artist who lives and works in Rome. Part of the millennial generation, De Santis’s work focuses on examining today’s society, paying particular attention to the symbols that define digital culture today, such as the use of hashtags and other punctuation marks. Many of his recent works consist of imposed monochromatic painting on marble, a material that calls back to the imperial icons of his hometown and is synonym of immutability, acting as a testimony of time alteration and metamorphosis.

In Drunk Blue, the modern era meets history, featuring parenthetical brackets vibrantly painted on marble. More often seen in computer programming than in writing, these less commonly-used punctuation marks create a bold positive and negative space in the composition, evoking openness and closure, blending digital and analogic, blurring background and foreground.
