More information about this artwork

The delicate orchid flower was a major inspiration for the work of Robert Mapplethorpe, who captured it in many of his works. It’s no surprise – much of his work dealt with sexuality, and the orchid is commonly thought to be associated with fertility and sexuality, with interesting reproductive habits of their own – for instance, the flowers emit pheromones that mimic those of female insects to attract male insects to aid in pollination.
