The British artist and illustrator David Shrigley is mostly known for his witty cartoons and his crude, dark humor targeting the fears, aspirations and banalities of the adult world. His provocative pieces typically feature straightforward and honest strings of text alongside simplistic and cartoonish illustrative drawings. Words and associations play a crucial role in his practice, blurring the lines between drawing and handwriting. Shrigley’s work is also acclaimed within the musical industry, collaborating with internationally famous musicians like Blur and Franz Ferdinand in the direction of music videos and the creation of illustrations for their albums.
My Artwork is one of Shrigley's most famous pieces, being a great representation of his artistic trademark. This immersive and anguishing neon scrawl, which claims ‘My Artwork is Terrible and I am a Very Bad Person’, portrays the strong conceptual component of his body of work, defined by the artist as his unique Gonzo version of conceptualism. Shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2013, Shrigley is redefining the contemporary art scene.
