German artist Gerhard Richter has pioneered many artistic techniques during his long career, perhaps none more well-known than Vermalung. As described by Dietmar Elger in Gerhard Richter: A Life in Painting, the term refers to a practice that loosely translates to ‘inpainting’, or ‘[disrupting] the clarity and distinction of forms and figures in an image.’ In this piece, the forms and figures are the bold and pronounced brush strokes that animate the work.
