Picasso enjoyed an exceptionally long and fruitful career and produced an estimated 50,000 artworks throughout his life spanning all media. Experimenting with different styles and techniques, he is regarded as a founding father of Cubism, an art style inspired by the geometric shapes that come together to create larger forms and figures. He employed these techniques in sculptures, paintings, drawings, and ceramics, and many other artists drew inspiration from this movement.
Part of Pablo Picasso’s Vollard Suite of 100 neoclassical etchings, this piece was created in 1933 during Picasso’s most intense period of work. Le Repos du Sculpteur et la Modèle au masque portrays a virile sculptor and a young model resting naked, holding hands, while contemplating the artist’s oeuvre casted at her image. The Vollard suite is regarded as one of the most important bodies of work of the 20th century. Picasso’s work is among the most expensive in the world, and several of his pieces hold records across several auction houses for fetching the highest sale prices in different categories.
