Will Cotton is an American painter celebrated for his oniric foodscapes made of an elaborate range of candy and sweets. Creating real maquettes of baked goods, ice creams, candies and other types of confectionery to compose his paintings, Cotton deep dives in the realm of popular iconography, advertisement and consumption culture. Through his indulgent candyland scenes, inciting desire, lust and greed, the artist paints a critical portrait of our glutted and insatiable society. Cotton was the artistic director of Katy Perry’s California Gurls music video in 2010, based on his imaginary and unique world. He is represented by blue chip galleries such as Galerie Daniel Templon.
Happy is part of Cotton’s earliest works, in which he referenced pop icons of the 1990s featured in contemporary advertisements, such as the Quick bunny from Nestlé. Staring at us with lustrous and shiny eyes, something attracts us to this magical and brightly colored cartoon puppy that seems to be directly pulled from a TV commercial.
