Alex Katz

Artist Information

While many artists focus on one genre – some on portraits, some on landscapes – Katz devoted his work to capturing the beauty in both equally. His favorite subjects were also his greatest loves – his wife Ada, whose likeness he captured in hundreds of portraits, and the landscapes of New York City and Maine, the latter being where he spent his summers. Born in New York in 1927, Katz studied painting at The Cooper Union Art School in Manhattan and the Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture in Maine. He enjoyed a long and successful career marked by more than 200 solo exhibitions and 500 group exhibitions across the globe. Over the past decade, Katz has reframed the perspective of his work, drawing upon photos taken with his iPhone to recreate them in a new 2D vision, creating depth through the painting process.
