Yayoi Kusama

Artist Information

Contemporary Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama has dabbled in countless artistic genres and practices throughout her long career. Though she was formally trained in traditional Japanese painting methods, her original artistic inspiration was drawn from American abstract impressionism, and she would later experiment with pop art and political performance art. She is considered to be one of the most important contemporary Japanese artists, and a hallmark of her work is her use of polka-dots, which she regards as being a symbol of infinity. Though her body of work encompasses many artistic practices, it is her installation and sculpture work, which appears around the world, for which she is most famous.
