Born in Bogotá, Olga de Amaral is considered one of the most important figures in the development of post-war Latin American abstraction. Deeply moved by an exploration of the architecture, mathematics and the socio-cultural dichotomies of her country, the artist’s two-dimensional textile-based pieces become sculptural presences incorporating fiber, paint, gesso and precious metals. Olga is highly acclaimed for her golden surfaces, effusing sensuality and devotion and establishing a link with Colombia’s pre-Hispanic past.
Olga de Amaral’s work is held in the collections of over forty museums worldwide, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery in Washington D.C., the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, among others.
