Hungarian-born photographer Andre Kertesz is considered one of the founding fathers of photojournalism. He took up a love of photography at a young age, bringing his camera into the trenches of WWI and capturing the horrors of the battlefield, even if those photos were later destroyed. His unique style and avant-garde camera angles caught the eye of the world’s most famous magazine publishers. Kertesz’s work is internationally acclaimed for his groundbreaking use of light when composing the photograph.
Chez Mondrian, taken shortly after Kertesz moved to France from his native Hungary, shows a unique perspective in the home of fellow artist Piet Mondrian. Split between the room Kertesz was in and the entry foyer and staircase, the duality of the sharp line dividing the two spaces and the soft curves of the bannister are particularly eye-catching.
