Francis Bacon is known for portraying somewhat obscured human figures, and in this work he used his own body as inspiration. Alone in a room on a chair, seemingly curled up, this image conveys a sense of isolation and purposeless in Bacon – unsurprising, given how deeply affected he was by the suicide of his longtime lover George Dyer years earlier.
