Yayoi Kusama has grown to become one of the most important contemporary Japanese artists. Continuously innovating and re-inventing her style, Yayoi has dabbled in countless artistic genres and practices throughout her long-spanning career. Though she was formally trained in traditional Japanese painting methods, her original artistic inspiration was drawn from American abstract impressionism, and she would later experiment with pop art and political performance art. Obsessed with polka-dots, seen as a symbol of infinity and escape of psychological trauma, Kusama’s immersive installations and astonishing sculptures have fetched worldwide success and fame.
Fish presents itself as a sublime demonstration of the artist’s multidisciplinarity. In this work on paper, Kusama utilizes several techniques, such as watercolor, marker and collage, to portray a fish in a dreamy underwater seascape. Rendered in her vibrant and psychedelic colors, she transforms the oxygen bubbles into her unmatched polka dots.
