Harland Miller, born in 1964, is a British artist known for his distinctive approach to blending text and imagery with a critical eye on contemporary issues. His work often reimagines vintage book covers, infusing them with ironic and thought-provoking messages that reflect on modern society. Miller’s art is celebrated for its bold visual impact and intellectual engagement, addressing themes of language, identity, and social critique with a unique retro aesthetic.
In his 2022 screenprint Hate Outta Date, Miller offers a powerful commentary on the Russia-Ukraine war, emphasizing that hatred is no longer “cool” or acceptable in today’s world. This artwork, measuring 39 3/8 x 27 9/16 inches, is produced in two color variants: blue and yellow. These colors are deliberately chosen to represent the national colors of Ukraine, underscoring the piece’s relevance to the ongoing conflict. Each version of the print, from an edition of 125, serves as a visual statement against the backdrop of the war, advocating for peace and condemning the destructive power of hatred. Published by White Cube, Hate Outta Date not only engages with current global issues but also highlights Miller’s ability to use art as a platform for social and political commentary.
