Kenny Scharf rose to prominence in 1980s New York as a central figure of the East Village scene, forging a vibrant visual language that blended graffiti culture, retro cartoons, and space-age fantasy. His works are populated by exuberant, animated characters rendered in electrifying color, reflecting both the playful optimism and underlying anxieties of the late 20th century. While often associated with large-scale paintings and immersive installations, Scharf’s works on paper reveal the immediacy and spontaneity at the core of his practice.
Untitled (1985) is an intimate and energetic example, executed in original acrylic and marker on paper. Measuring 9 3/4 × 13 3/4 inches, the work captures Scharf’s signature biomorphic forms and animated expressions in a compact, highly focused format. The combination of fluid acrylic passages and bold marker line emphasizes both movement and character, underscoring the artist’s instinctive draftsmanship. Signed and titled on the verso, this 1985 work embodies the exuberant spirit of Scharf’s most celebrated period, distilling the dynamic energy of his larger compositions into a vivid, collectible scale.
