Robert Longo is one of the defining American artists to emerge from New York’s Pictures Generation in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Working across drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, film, and music, Longo has built a distinctive visual language around images of power, movement, violence, and contemporary culture. *James*, 1999, revisits this seminal *Men in the Cities* imagery on an impressive, nearly six-foot-tall scale. The series originated with photographs Longo staged of friends and acquaintances reacting physically to objects thrown toward them, which he subsequently translated into meticulously rendered compositions. Isolated against a stark white background and dressed in the uniform of urban professional life, the figure in *James* appears frozen at the height of an involuntary movement, creating the tension between elegance and vulnerability that defines the series. The dramatic contrast and monumental scale give the figure a commanding physical presence while preserving the ambiguity of whether he is dancing, falling, or recoiling from an unseen force. Executed in 1999 as an original lithograph on Arches paper, *James* measures 70 × 40 inches (177.8 × 101.6 cm) and was produced in an edition of only 50, with additional hors-commerce examples. Each work from the edition is hand-signed, dated, and numbered in pencil.
