Artist Information

James Jean is a Taiwanese-American visual artist. Starting his career as a comic artist, Jean worked for the leading comic book publishers DC Comics and Marvel Comics and received 13 Eisner Awards – the Academy Awards for the comic industry – for his book and film covers for widely acclaimed productions, such as Dennis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 or Guillermo del Toro’s Shape of Water. The artist’s high-profile collaborations expand to fashion, music and international publications, with clients including Prada, Apple, The New York Times, Playboy, Linkin Park or My Chemical Romance.

Since 2008, James has focused exclusively in his career as a painter, leaving behind his days as comic illustrator. Blending past and present, classic and abstract, western and eastern, rare and popular, Jean’s art is timeless, complex and captivating. He modernizes influences from Renaissance masters, Chinese silk scroll paintings and Japanese woodblock prints to create his very own fantastic narrative.
