Artist Information

Blurring the line between high art and commercial art, Marilyn Minter uses her work – primarily photographs and paintings – to convey sensuality and sexuality in a way that is accessible to both men and women. As a young woman during the so-called ‘Golden Age of Porn’ when pornography went mainstream in magazines and movie theatres, Minter observed a certain level of objectification of women and in the late 1980’s elevated her work to reference that phenomenon and turn it on its head. Many of her pieces, particularly her newer pieces, focus in on one part of the body and feature it as the main subject of the piece, adding embellishments and features to enhance or obscure its appearance in a way that keeps the women real but makes the image more beautiful. In a recent interview with ArtNews, Minter described a motivation of her work: ‘I want women to look like they can’t get thrown away.’
