More information about this artwork

Claes Oldenburg is a Swedish-born American sculptor best known for his monumental soft sculptures of mundane objects. As any pop artist, Oldenburg is fascinated by the banality of the everyday objects and their power to convey contradictory ideas such as simplicity and sophistication, levity and solemnity, stereotype and uniqueness. His remarkable sculptural forms often explore the embedded materiality of our world.

Geometric Mouse plays with the image of one of the most iconic and familiar cartoon characters. His quintessential round ears are the centerpiece of a pure conjunction of bold black geometric shapes, turned into an old movie camera. His Mickey Mouse versions embody Oldenburg’s ultimate artistic interrogations, having himself suggested that Geometric Mouse is his alter ego.
