Dan Graham is an American artist, curator and writer. His work integrates photography, video, performance art, architecture and sculpture, being widely acclaimed for his captivating glass and mirror structures. Starting his career in the mid-1960s as the founder and director of the John Daniels Gallery in New York, Graham gave visibility to minimalist and conceptual artists, notably to Donald Judd, Robert Smithson, Carl André and Sol Lewitt’s, putting the latter's first one-man show. As an artist, Graham explores the relationship between space, its physical and psychological boundaries, and the viewer’s perception. Working at the crossroads of minimalism and conceptual art, of architecture and sculpture, Dan’s conceptual pavilions, notably Two Way Mirror with Hedge Labyrinth and Two Way Mirror and Open Wood Screen Triangular Pavilion, have increased his popularity as an artist.
Around Christmas is part of a series of random photographs that the artist took in New York in 1988/89. Around 10 years later, he found the negatives in a drawer and decided to develop them. His former assistant Christine Meier got the chance to exhibit a selection of them in her gallery in 2002.
