Born in South Africa, Dean Levin is an unconventional artist, internationally recognized for the use of architectural techniques in his artistic practice. Employing refined design elements, such as his iconic tiled grids and indices, and a reduced palette, Levin experiments with light, space and form. His artistic practice resonates with the minimalist aesthetic of the Light and Space movement.
This oil on canvas is an outstanding outcome of the artist’s ongoing investigatory gesture. The solid coat of black paint, combined with subtle brushstrokes of lighter color shades, renders the surface of the canvas almost reflective. At the same time, Levin maps a two-dimensional plane with the use of his hand-painted grids, challenging our perception of space and playing with the tension between mechanical and manual reproduction.
