Ed Ruscha, a pivotal figure in the Pop Art movement, has consistently explored the intersection of text and imagery throughout his prolific career. His 2013 lithograph, “Periods,” exemplifies this approach by juxtaposing bold typographic elements with serene natural landscapes. Measuring 28 3/4 x 28 inches (73.03 x 71.12 cm), this limited edition of 60 prints features units of time—“SECS., HRS., WKS., MOS., YRS.”—prominently overlaid on a depiction of snow-capped mountains and a deep blue lake. Each print is signed, numbered, and dated by Ruscha on the lower front, underscoring the artist’s meticulous attention to detail.
“Periods” is part of Ruscha’s Mountain Series, where he integrates textual elements with majestic mountain imagery. This series reflects his ongoing fascination with language and its visual representation, encouraging viewers to contemplate the passage of time against the backdrop of enduring natural forms. The contrast between the ephemeral nature of human time measurements and the timelessness of the mountains invites a meditation on our perception of time and permanence.
