HOPE (RED/BLUE), 2012

Robert Indiana was a central figure in postwar American art, best known for transforming the language of signs, advertising, and everyday words into bold examinations of American identity and culture. Emerging alongside the Pop Art movement in the 1960s, Indiana developed a distinctive vocabulary of short, emotionally charged words rendered through hard-edged geometry, vivid color, and monumental typography. His iconic *LOVE* composition, first developed in the 1960s, became one of the most recognizable images in modern art and established Indiana’s lifelong interest in the expressive power of language. While visually direct, his work often carries more complex associations with optimism, spirituality, politics, and the contradictions of the American experience.

*HOPE (RED/BLUE)*, 2012, extends this celebrated visual language through a composition Indiana first conceived in 2008, replacing *LOVE* with another universal four-letter word while retaining the characteristic stacked arrangement and dramatically tilted letter “O.” The word *HOPE* carries an intentionally affirmative message, yet its presentation as a physical object transforms language into something architectural and monumental—meant to be experienced as both image and sculpture. In this 2012 example, the striking red-and-blue palette reinforces the work’s distinctly American character and connects it to the bold colors that recur throughout Indiana’s career. Executed in painted aluminum and measuring 26 × 26 inches (66 × 66 cm), the sculpture is signed and dated on the verso and additionally incised **“R Indiana”** along the side.
