Ansel Adams was an American photographer and environmentalist widely known for his striking wildlife and landscape photographs. He mastered every photographic system and continuously experimented with new techniques. The resulting clarity and depth of his images is considered the trademark of his photographic style. Fascinated by nature, Adam succeeded in capturing motion beautifully as well as avoiding embellishment in his pictures.
Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico is the artist’s most popular photograph in the span of his career. The scene features the moon rising above an isolated village, under a pitch-black sky. A line of snow-covered mountains fades into the dense barrier of clouds. The popularity of the photograph grew when Adam described, in one of his later books, how he used the luminance of the Moon to calculate the exposure. This photograph, re-printed in the ‘70s using the latest darkroom equipment at his disposal, fetched the artist’s record value for a single print.
