Gunther Uecker is a German painter and sculptor, fascinated by the visual exploration of surface, light and space. The use of nails, hammered into mundane ready-mades to create artworks in between paintings and sculptures, are at the center of his innovative practice. Uecker’s optic and kinetic art employs natural materials such as sand, water, electricity, stone, ash and glass to generate a holistic sensation of light, space, movement and time.
Ouroboros constitutes one of his latest compositions, in line with the artist’s emblematic aesthetics. Featuring twelve terragraphs on canvas, each of them portrays a sequence of an ever-changing circle, with different textures and patterns. The warm monochromatic gold color of the sand contributes to the creation of a naturalistic and spiritual aura, mutating alongside the perpetual creation and destruction, order and chaos of life. Gunther Uecker has received several prestigious awards throughout his enduring artistic career, spanning seven remarkable decades.
