Donald Sultan is an American artist with a distinguished career as a painter, printmaker and sculptor. His imagery is simultaneously abstract and representational, being predominantly known for his large-scale still life paintings. Sultan's works feature provocative objects, well-defined shapes and crisp outlines, elevated by a subtle and monumental purity of form. He is interested in subjects from nature, poppies and lemons being his most iconic images, and experiments with industrial materials and techniques, such as tar, enamel, spackle and vinyl tiles. Sultan’s body of work plays with the negative and positive balance of an image, creating weighty and pleasantly vibrant compositions.
This recent portfolio of four large-scale silkscreens portraying colorful poppies in red, yellow, blue and grey is a classic example of Sultan’s emblematic aesthetic. Featuring bright and vigorous blocks of primary colors, these prints showcase his signature emphasis of negative and positive areas. Sultan has been featured in numerous exhibitions internationally and is part of a large number of permanent collections in prestigious institutions.
