Massimo Vitali is an Italian photographer famous for his large-format color photographs of beaches, tourist sites and mass-leisure events. Vitali started his career as a fine art photographer in 1990, previously working as a photojournalist and cinematographer after graduating from the London College of Printing in the 1960s, moved by a desire to expose the complexities of reality in a drastically changing political environment. Showcasing satisfying and light-hearted panoramic views of people interacting with each other and with their surrounding environment, the artist reveals the cosmetic fakery, commodification and conformism behind the apparent Italian normality. Shot from above, often standing on a five meters high podium, Vitali’s photographs unveil a certain sense of voyeurism.
Massimo Vitali’s works can be found in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, among others.
