Acclaimed for his vibrant and colorful flat surfaces, Alex Katz is one of the most respected living American artists with a career that spans six remarkable decades. With a minimal and highly stylized aesthetic influenced by films, television and billboard advertising, Katz is the visionary New York painter of his generation who embodied the defiance towards 1950s Abstract Expressionism and the anticipation of Pop Art. His works are defined by his extreme emotional detachment and his emblematic flatness of color and form. Katz has remained a prolific painter with an impressive collection of linear portraits and environmental landscapes.
With an extensive portfolio of wildflower paintings, Yellow Flags III is one of his most recent artworks depicting a delicate bunch of yellow wildflowers against a silky pink background. The feeble and pale stems provide a sense of movement to the work, as the slow wind seems to be smoothly bending its ends. Katz started painting wildflowers in 1950 as a way of introducing movement to his artistic work.
