More information about this artwork

Frank Stella is one of the most influential figures in postwar American art, known for his relentless push beyond the boundaries of painting into increasingly complex, dynamic compositions. Emerging in the late 1950s with his austere Black Paintings, Stella quickly evolved toward vibrant, layered works that embraced color, movement, and unconventional formats. By the 1970s, his practice had shifted decisively toward maximalism, culminating in the celebrated Circuits series—where industrial techniques and hand intervention merge to create intricate, almost architectural surfaces.

Green Solitaire (A. 112.3), 1979, exemplifies this ambitious period. Executed in screenprint, stencil, and hand-coloring in oil paint on Trycore, the work combines mechanical precision with painterly spontaneity, resulting in a richly textured and visually kinetic composition. The sweeping arcs, interlocking bands, and vivid palette create a sense of depth and motion that challenges the flatness of traditional printmaking. Signed in green ink, dated, and numbered from an exceptionally rare edition of 10, and measuring an impressive 60 x 84 inches (152.4 x 213.4 cm), the work commands a monumental presence—bridging the gap between print and painting while underscoring Stella’s continued exploration of scale, materiality, and abstraction.
