Frank Stella stands as one of the most influential figures in postwar American art, celebrated for continually pushing the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and printmaking. By the early 1980s, Stella had moved far beyond the restrained geometry of his celebrated Black Paintings, embracing increasingly dynamic, layered compositions that explored movement, energy, and spatial complexity. His Circuits Series, created between 1982 and 1984, was inspired by international automobile racing circuits and reflects the artist’s fascination with speed, motion, and the intersection of structure and improvisation. Through an innovative combination of relief printing, engraving, woodcut, and hand-coloring techniques, Stella transformed traditional printmaking into a highly physical and sculptural medium, creating works that possess both visual intensity and remarkable dimensionality.
*Imola Three II, from the Circuits Series* (1984) exemplifies Stella’s technical virtuosity and relentless experimentation. Executed as a relief woodcut on white TGL handmade paper and enhanced with hand-coloring, the composition is an energetic interplay of sweeping forms, layered lines, and vivid passages of red, blue, and yellow. Named after the famed Imola racetrack in Italy, the work translates the sensation of velocity and mechanical movement into a vibrant abstract language. Measuring an impressive 52 x 62 inches (132.1 x 167.6 cm), the print commands attention through both its monumental scale and its richly textured surface. Numbered from the edition of only 30 and hand-signed by Stella in pencil, *Imola Three II* represents a significant achievement from one of the artist’s most ambitious print series, showcasing the innovative spirit that defined his career and secured his place among the foremost artists of the twentieth century.
