Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, celebrated for his raw, expressive visual language that fused street art, Neo-Expressionism, and cultural commentary. Emerging from New York City's downtown art scene in the late 1970s, Basquiat rapidly gained international recognition for his distinctive combination of bold imagery, fragmented text, anatomical references, and recurring symbols. His work explored themes of identity, race, power, history, and the human condition, often drawing inspiration from African American culture, jazz, literature, and his own experiences. Despite his tragically short career, Basquiat fundamentally reshaped contemporary art, leaving behind a body of work that continues to resonate with collectors, museums, and audiences worldwide.
*M*, originally conceived in 1984 and issued as an estate-authorized silkscreen edition in 2026, exemplifies Basquiat's unmistakable visual vocabulary. The composition centers on a striking, mask-like figure, rendered with energetic black lines, vivid blue, yellow, and red accents, and a complex interplay of geometric forms and expressive gestures. The figure's piercing eyes, exposed teeth, and elongated neck evoke Basquiat's enduring fascination with anatomy, African-inspired imagery, and the psychological intensity of portraiture. Executed as a cut-edge enamel silkscreen on heavyweight 425 gsm Saunders Waterford hot-press paper, the work measures an impressive 60 × 48 inches (152.4 × 121.9 cm) and belongs to a limited edition of 85. Bearing the signatures of Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, administrators of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat, alongside the Estate's stamps on the verso, this posthumous edition translates the immediacy and visual power of Basquiat's 1984 imagery into a monumental contemporary print.
