More information about this artwork

RETNA (b. 1979, Los Angeles) is one of the most distinctive artists to emerge from the Los Angeles graffiti movement, renowned for transforming lettering into a highly sophisticated visual language. His signature script draws from Egyptian hieroglyphics, Arabic and Hebrew calligraphy, Gothic Blackletter, and contemporary graffiti, creating forms that appear simultaneously ancient, architectural, and futuristic. Rather than functioning as conventional text, RETNA’s invented alphabet occupies the space between language and abstraction, inviting the viewer to experience rhythm, gesture, repetition, and scale before attempting to decipher meaning. His work has expanded from the streets of Los Angeles to major institutional exhibitions, international murals, and collaborations with leading cultural and luxury brands.

Green Goddess (2025) exemplifies the commanding presence of RETNA’s mature practice. Executed in diamond dust and acrylic on canvas, the monumental 84 × 60 inch composition is rendered in a deep, saturated green, with densely interlocking glyphs extending across the surface like an elaborate monumental inscription. The contrast between the precision of RETNA’s constructed forms and the spontaneous drips and painterly traces gives the work a dynamic tension between control and movement. The diamond dust introduces a subtle luminosity to the otherwise monochromatic surface, catching the light and emphasizing the physicality of the canvas. At this scale, Green Goddess becomes less a painting to be read than an immersive field of signs—an imposing synthesis of calligraphy, graffiti, abstraction, and contemporary mythology. Signed and titled on the verso.
