More information about this artwork

Born in 1975 in Nagano, Japan, Susumu Kamijo is a contemporary artist celebrated for his bold, gestural paintings that seamlessly merge Japanese calligraphic traditions with the expressive energy of Western abstraction. Now based in Brooklyn, New York, Kamijo has cultivated a highly recognizable visual language characterized by fluid brushwork, flattened forms, and a vibrant use of color. Although he is perhaps best known for his iconic poodle paintings, his practice extends beyond portraiture, exploring themes of identity, movement, memory, and human connection through a playful yet sophisticated visual vocabulary. Kamijo's ability to balance spontaneity with formal precision has earned him widespread recognition, with his work featured in prominent galleries and esteemed private collections around the world.

*The Traveler* (2020) exemplifies Kamijo's confident and expressive approach to painting. Executed in flashe on canvas, the work demonstrates the artist's mastery of bold, matte color fields and energetic brushwork, creating a composition that feels both immediate and deeply considered. The title suggests notions of exploration and transition, themes that resonate with Kamijo's own cross-cultural experiences while inviting viewers to form their own interpretations. Signed and titled on the verso, this intimate 24 × 20 inch canvas captures the spontaneity and visual rhythm that define Kamijo's practice, making it a compelling example of one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary painting.
