Harland Miller is a British artist and writer, famous for his debut novel Slow Down Arthur, Stick to Thirty (2000) and his photo-realistic paintings of vintage Penguin book covers. Experimenting with different materials and sizes, he explores the interrelation between the visual and the written world. Influenced by Pop Art and Abstract artists such as Ed Ruscha and Robert Rauschenberg, Miller’s artworks feature playful titles, phrases and words, placing narrative at the heart of his practice. A growing number of celebrities have been collecting Miller’s art in recent years, turning him into a highly attractive figure in the contemporary art world.
This unique work is part of his most distinguished series, where Miller appropriates the iconic Penguin books’ logo to recreate dusty and aging book covers, usually featuring his own sardonic and poignant invented titles. The use of muted tones, dripping paint and intense brushstrokes convey a vintage and nostalgic character to the piece. Captivated by the worn yellow color and the tragi-comic title, we feel the urge to go beyond the cover.
