Considered one of the leading figures in the development of American conceptual art, Mel Bochner explores the conventions and intersection of painting and language. Wanting to break with Abstract Expressionism and the alleged obsolescence of painting in the 60’s, his artistic practice promotes the thinking over the making. Bochner has pioneered the use of photo-documentation and other conceptual exhibition strategies, challenging ideas with perception. His most iconic series of so-called thesaurus paintings feature intensely colorful, big, striking lists of synonyms, dramatically developing a word into its more profane expression.
Mendacious is one of the most acclaimed works of this series, showcasing Bochner’s fascination with language and color. Here, words become a form of pictorial manifestation in themselves and defy the role of language in the understanding of our surrounding reality. Regarded as one of the front runners in the use of words and typography in the visual arts, he remains one of the most influential conceptual artists.
