More information about this artwork

Andy Warhol (1928–1987) fundamentally reshaped the landscape of contemporary art by elevating everyday imagery into the realm of fine art. Through his innovative use of screenprinting and his fascination with consumer culture, celebrity, and commerce, Warhol created a visual language that became synonymous with Pop Art. His work consistently explored the symbols and systems that define modern society, often focusing on objects and images that carry collective cultural meaning. In the early 1980s, Warhol turned his attention to the imagery of money, producing the celebrated *Dollar Signs* series, which distilled themes of wealth, aspiration, and value into one of the most universally recognized symbols in the world.

Created in 1982, *Dollar Sign $* is a striking example of Warhol’s late-career mastery of color, repetition, and graphic impact. This screenprint on Lenox Museum Board is one of only fifteen Trial Proofs produced in addition to the edition of sixty unique screenprints, with this impression featuring its own distinctive color combination. Trial Proofs occupy a particularly important place in the printmaking process, offering insight into the artist’s experimentation with color and composition before the final edition was completed. Signed and numbered by Warhol in pencil and bearing the artist’s copyright inkstamp on the verso, the work combines exceptional rarity with strong historical significance. By transforming the dollar sign into a vibrant and visually compelling image, Warhol both celebrates and questions the role of money within contemporary culture, creating an artwork that remains as relevant and resonant today as when it was first conceived.
