Andy Warhol was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century and the defining figure of American Pop Art. Beginning in the 1960s, he transformed the visual language of advertising, celebrity, consumer products, and everyday objects into fine art, challenging traditional distinctions between commercial imagery and artistic expression. His use of screenprinting was fundamental to this approach, allowing him to repeat and manipulate familiar images through unexpected combinations of color, scale, and composition. From Campbell’s Soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles to portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Mick Jagger, Warhol elevated recognizable subjects into icons of contemporary culture. Printmaking remained central to his practice throughout his career and produced many of his most immediately recognizable and visually vibrant works.
*Grapes #195*, 1979, is the final image from Warhol’s six-work *Grapes* portfolio (Feldman & Schellmann II.190–195), in which the artist turned to one of the oldest subjects in art history: the still life. Rather than depicting the fruit naturalistically, Warhol reduces the grapes to bold outlines and flat, saturated areas of unexpected color, transforming a traditional motif into something unmistakably contemporary and distinctly Pop. The simplicity of the subject contrasts with the vivid palette and graphic quality of the composition, reflecting Warhol’s ability to make an ordinary image feel both decorative and iconic. *Grapes #195* was printed by Rupert Jasen Smith and published by Andy Warhol Enterprises, Inc., New York. Executed as a screenprint in colors on Strathmore Bristol paper, it measures 40 × 30 inches (101.6 × 76.2 cm) and comes from an edition of only 50, in addition to 10 artist’s proofs and a small number of other proofs. The work is hand-signed in ink and numbered and is recorded as **Feldman & Schellmann II.195** in the artist’s catalogue raisonné.
