Considered one of the fathers of American Pop Art movement, Peter Saul’s controversial political pop art has provided a sociological mirror to our contemporary realities for the last five decades. Choosing acclaimed and widely-known political characters and depicting them as acid-like, psychedelic cartoons is at the heart of his artistic practice. Fascinated with psychiatry, Peter’s figures tend to manifest a certain mental illness and psychological instability, emphasized by a palette of bright and hallucinatory colors. Richard Nixon, George W. Bush, Lyndon Johnson and Donald Trump are among the victims of Peter Saul’s satirical brush. The artist’s works are held in the permanent collections of leading museums such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Center Georges Pompidou, the Museum Ludwig, and the Stedelijk Museum.
This set of 4 aquatint etchings is rendered in his fun, cartoonish and whimsical style, featuring his unique in-your-face honesty. Interested in the psychological impact of his works, Peter Saul describes his artistic exploration as ‘reaching for the hot sauce at a restaurant so your dish has more oomph’.
