Alejandro Piñeiro Bello is a Cuban-born, Miami-based artist who has emerged as one of the more closely watched rising figures of his generation. Rooted in identity, memory, and the cultural mythology of the Caribbean, his practice transforms the flora, seascapes, and atmosphere of Cuba and its surrounding islands into fluid, dreamlike compositions that move freely between figuration and abstraction. His ascent has been particularly notable: in 2023, he was selected for the prestigious artist-in-residence program at the Rubell Museum in Miami, culminating in a major museum presentation and the acquisition of his work for the Rubell collection. That same year, Artsy identified him among the buzziest artists of Miami Art Week, and in 2024 he officially joined Pace Gallery, placing him on the roster of one of the world's leading contemporary galleries. Pace has since mounted major solo exhibitions of his work in London and Hong Kong, further establishing his growing international profile.
In Ser Natural, 2023, Piñeiro Bello takes particular advantage of watercolor's transparency and unpredictability, allowing washes of green, violet, turquoise, coral, and yellow to bleed and flow across the Arches paper. Organic forms emerge and recede throughout the composition: lush vegetation appears near its center, while rippling passages suggest water, reflections, clouds, and an expansive sky populated by planetary or eye-like forms. The work feels less like a literal landscape than a remembered or imagined one, with earth, water, and sky collapsing into a single vibrant psychological environment. This fluidity is central to Piñeiro Bello's broader practice, in which memories and dreams become the foundation for seemingly endless landscapes. Measuring 22 1/2 × 30 inches (57.2 × 76.2 cm.), Ser Natural is executed in watercolor on Arches paper and signed and titled on the verso.
