More information about this artwork

Andy Warhol’s Vote McGovern, 1972, stands as one of his most overtly political works, created in support of Democratic candidate George McGovern during the 1972 U.S. presidential election. Executed as a screenprint in colors on Arches 88 and signed and numbered from an edition of 250, the work depicts a distorted and unsettling portrait of then-incumbent president Richard Nixon. Warhol renders Nixon’s face in lurid, unnatural tones—acidic greens, yellows, and blues—set against a bold red background, amplifying a sense of unease and caricature. The large-scale format (42 × 42 inches) enhances its confrontational presence, evoking the visual language of political posters while unmistakably bearing Warhol’s signature Pop sensibility.

Unlike much of Warhol’s work, which often maintains an ambiguous stance toward its subjects, Vote McGovern delivers a clear and pointed message. By weaponizing his commercial aesthetic, Warhol transforms the tools of advertising into a form of political critique, using color and distortion to undermine Nixon’s public image. The work reflects both the charged atmosphere of the Vietnam War era and Warhol’s own engagement with contemporary events, marking a rare moment where his art intersects directly with activism. At once a piece of campaign material and a lasting artwork, Vote McGovern highlights the power of imagery in shaping public perception, reinforcing Warhol’s enduring relevance in discussions of politics, media, and influence.
