Anton Corbijn is a Dutch photographer, film and music video director. He is the creative director behind some of the most influential music videos such as U2’s ‘One’, Coldplay’s ‘Viva la Vida’ and Nirvana’s ‘Heart-Shaped Box’. Being discovered around 1975 when he took photographs of the Dutch musician Herman Brood while he was playing at a café in the Netherlands, Corbijn’s photography has grown beyond music over the years. Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Björk, Miles Davis, Joy Division but also Robert de Niro, Clint Eastwood and Stephen Hawking have been the subject of his renowned black-and-white portraits.
This piece is a 1994 portrait of Clint Eastwood shot by the artist. Even though this portrait predates Eastwood’s breakthrough movie ‘Gran Torino’, Corbijn masterfully captured the essence of who once was Dirty Harry and The Stranger, and would become Walt ‘get off my lawn’ Kowalski. The artist’s characteristic universe of darkness, mystery and dust renders a tough, unpolished and powerful image of one Hollywood’s most iconic figures.
